Senior Seth Olson, Chair of the Honor Board, reports "One of the most common academic violations the board sees is plagiarism'. Dr. Corey Olsen, Interim Associate Provost, said on the subject, "There has been a level of ignorance. Some students will say, 'I didn't cut and paste - I just paraphrased,' but that's still plagiarism."

Professors ultimately determine which cases will go to the Honor Board for hearings. "It's unusual for a first offense academic violation to go to the Honor Board," said Dr. Olsen. Said Olson, "Professors are the first line of enforcement. They can fail a student for the assignment or for the class without consultation of the Honor Board, so the professor has the final say." Dr. Olsen remarked that second offenses "will almost always go to the Honor Board."
